Grief Companion Program

Many of our donor families have told us that talking with another understanding donor family member who has experienced a similar loss can help fill a vital need for support and encouragement. And some of our longer-term donor family members want to offer this support and encouragement to help others on their journey through grief. To address this need, LifeNet Health has developed a unique service - the Grief Companion Program.

If you are a LifeNet Health Donor Family member and wish to talk with a trained LifeNet Health Grief Companion...

A Grief Companion provides a safe and compassionate environment for you to talk about whatever you need to without worry of being misunderstood or judged, an empathetic listener and understanding companion through the difficult and sometimes confusing experience following the loss of a loved one.

If you are interested in having a Grief Companion, please provide us with the following information, and we will contact you.

The Grief Companion Training Program is available to LifeNet Health donor family members who have walked their own grief journey for a significant period of time and who want to help others in their journeys. We believe that a companion who has experienced a similar loss becomes an extraordinary resource for the newly bereaved. His/her non-judgmental listening and acceptance can contribute greatly to a partner's healing process. We offer an extensive training program to assist you in providing a compassionate presence and non-judgmental listening for your partner.

Grief Companion Training Process:

The Grief Companion Training consists of two Phases:

  1. Phase 1 is an online segment where students will download and read 21 articles from our training website, complete the Reflection exercises, and email them to the Trainer who will review them and be available for questions or assistance. This Phase must be completed prior to, and for you to be eligible for, Phase 2.
  2. Phase 2 is the one-day (Saturday) workshop at a LifeNet Health facility during which we will discuss much of the online material and additional topics and participate in interactive exercises.
  3. You will then be certified as a LifeNet Health Grief Companion and be eligible for assignment with a newly bereaved partner.

Grief Companion is a registered servicemark of LifeNet Health.
